A Trader for the Cause
From DiploWiki
Overview
Game Description
Speak to the ship captains and convince them somehow to lower their rate for Padideh Tabatabai.
- Convince Captain Bene Raynier to Lower Prices
- Interview Captain Meshkat About Her Prices
- Incite Captain Kurik Redeye to Lower His Prices
- Entertain Captain Reyahni and Speak About Prices
Walkthrough
I found it easiest to do the parleys in the order listed below just because of proximity. It doesn't matter what order you speak to the NPC's in.
- Captain Meshkat is across the road and northeast of Trader Padideh at /loc -5621, -65756, 1310
- Captain Reyahni is just across the fire from Captain Meshkat
- Captain Kurik is further north, on the beach at /loc -5592, -70193, 438 (while here you might want to stop off and talk to Nakiro about Regional Trade)
- Captain Bene Raynier is in northwest Tawar Galan on the landing above the Martok Dock at /loc -42378, -65808, 1819
Return to Padideh to collect the reward.
Dialogues
Quest Offering
Padideh sighs, "So you think you would be able to help keep me in business a little while longer? I would greatly appreciate it if you could."
"I need you then, to talk to the captains I use into lowering rates for me. You can't simply kill them, obviously, for then I would have no one at all to ship my goods."
"I'll mark your journal. Go speak to them and say whatever you have to without offering more money. Be aware they are each very different. You may need to switch tactics between them."
Captain Bene Raynier
“You best be bringing good news, and not be looking for a fight.”
or
"To what do we owe the pleasure of your company this fine evening?"
- "Captain Bene," you say, "I had a couple of questions for you."
- "What do you need from me?" he says. "Does it require my attention or can Zee handle it?"
- "I would rather speak to you about it." you say. "Are you planning a run out of here soon?"
- "I will be," he says, eyeing you suspiciously. "Why do you want to know? I already have enough problems with the port authorities."
- "Nothing about that," you say. "I'm here on behalf of someone who needs something transported."
- "I see a 'but' in your eyes I'm not going to like," he says.
- "She can no longer afford your transport charges," you say.
- "The prices are the prices," he says. "I should have had you talk to Zee."
- "How long would (you) like to remain in business?" you ask.
- "Quite a while," he says.
- "And I assume you'd like to keep your ship through all of it, wouldn't you?"
- "Captain Bene's hand begins moving to his sword hilt. "Yes."
- "I'm not threatening to take your ship," you say. "I was merely going to suggest that if no one can afford your prices then you really won't be able to maintain your business."
- "If you could lower your prices for my associate, you would be able to do more volume of business, and make more money."
- "Hrm," he grunts. "I think I could let that fly for now. What's your associate's name?"
- "A trader named Padideh will be coming to speak to you then," you say.
Captain Meshkat
Captain Meshkat says, “The merchants have been trying to pay less for shipping recently. I’ve been refusing to carry any of them for lower prices though.”
- "So Captain Meshkat," you say, approaching, "I had a few questions for you if you don't mind."
- "That's fine," she sighs. "I'm waiting on my crew to sober up anyways."
- "I was wondering where your next port-of-call is?"
- "My ship and crew will be stopping by Khal before heading on to Konarthi Point," she says. "Why do you ask?"
- "How's business been on the run from here to Khal?" you ask, completely ignoring her question.
- "To tell you the truth somewhat shabby," she says. "The traders here aren't shipping enough and there are too many transporters to take what they can."
- "So how much would it cost to ship something to Khal then?"
- "To Khal? The price is the same as anywhere on Qalia. I charge one gold per barrel."
- "One gold per barrel!" you exclaim. Regaining your composure, you say, "So, I hear you complaining about too many transporters and too few traders paying you."
- "How about this deal. You're already going to Khal," you say, "and I have an associate who needs something shipped. Why don't you charge 50 silver per barrel?"
- "That's half the price," she says.
- "Think about it. It's either half the price, or nothing, since no one can afford your prices. You'll drive the others out of business as well if you're willing to haul cheaper."
- "Hrm," she says. "You make a good point. I guess I'll take it."
Captain Kurik Redeye
"There's no fire here except for those burning basins. We need a cooking fire. I'm sick of raw fruit!"
- "You are, uh...Captain Kurik Redeye?"
- "I am, Dark Elf," he says, "What do you want?"
- "I was sent by someone about you transporting something to Martok," you say.
- Captain Kurik blinks, then begins laughing hysterically. "Someone wants me to ship something somewhere?" he asks, catching his breath.
- "Yes," you say, sternly. "What is your price?"
- "My price?" he asks, "Well, uh, how about 20 silver per barrel," he says snickering.
- "You, uh, you don't ship goods do you?" you ask.
- "What could possibly have given you the idea that Redeye's Reavers don't safely ship items across the high seas?"
- "Well, it could be that you're a pirate," you say. "That may have given me the idea. But I was hoping this shipment meant for General Zowb would be something you could agree to."
- "General Zowb?" he sneers.
- "Yes," you say. "My associate has a shipment of 10,000 sea-squirrels that need to get to General Zowb."
- "What in Ghalnn's flaming boots of fury is a sea-squirrel?" he bellows.
- "I don't know, but if you want word to get (to) General Zowb that you held up his shipment of sea-squirrels, be my guest."
- "Alright, fine," he says. "But the price is 50 silver per barrel."
- "That will be fine," you say.
Captain Reyahni
Captain Reyahni says, “The northern winds were very bad this trip. I was dead in the water several times.”
- "It gets cold out there on the beaches and the docks," you say approaching. "How do you all do it?"
- Captain Rayahni turns to you. "We stand around this fire when we get too cold."
- "So tell me," you say to the Captain, "how goes business out on the seas these days?"
- Captain Reyahni shrugs. "It can only go so well", he says.
- "So I hear from the merchants and brokers that prices have been going up on shipping out," you say.
- "The danger has gone up recently," he says. "Captain Kurik over there is an example."
- "Of what? Danger?" you say. "Aw, I'm sure Captain Kurik is a gentleman out there on open water."
- "Hah!" the Captain blurts. "Sure, he may not attack if he's got a full load, but he got it from somewhere."
- "Where then?" you ask. "I've heard nothing of him actually taking goods from someone out there."
- "Well," the Captain says, "I've heard."
- "Not heard," you say. "I don't need stories told to you buy your brother's sister's maid that tells stories about orcs. Did you actually see these(?)."
- "Well, no, I guess," Captain Reyahni admits.
- "Then why do you charge people such prices?" you ask. "I think it would be more profitable for you to charge less and get more milage out of the merchants and traders."
- "I guess I could," he says.
- "Thank you," you say, walking away.

"I can't really thank you enough. If I could, what you did would have been worthless."

"Please take this plate and this statement, as a token of appreciation for the help. They, however, won't stay convinced forever. They'll start raising their prices bit by bit until we're back where we're at now. If you come back later, I might have more work for you."
