Game DescriptionTravel to the Sanctum of the Sacred Flame and research the history of the dwarven clans. Through your research, convince two Flamehammer clans to stay in the Cleft, and two Thunderaxe clans to fight.
WalkthroughAfter obtaining the writ from Royal Petitioner Redforge, leave the room and head to the north east wing of Bordinar's Cleft to the Sanctum of the Sacred Flame and meet with Koburn Darkvein. After the parley, turn around and search through the pile of scrolls on the floor. Keep searching until you find the four bits of information for Clan Runeaxe, Clan Truehammer, Clan Coldfire, and Clan Mountainhammer. The information bits for Clan Blackflint and Clan Warhorn are not needed. Right click on the information to get credit for finding it. After that, you will need to find one NPC from each of these families: Coldfire, Mountainhammer, Runeaxe and Truehammer. They will bear the same last name of their clan. These instructions give what is probably the fastest route, but really any clan member can work:
Once these parleys are done, head back to the main hall, then west past the petitioners into the King's chambers to speak with Chancellor Dagnol Granitefist to get your reward. NOTE: The information scrolls gained in the quest are lost at the end, so you will have to stand at the pile of scrolls digging for all four of the correct items if you redo the quest. DialogueRoyal Petitioner RedforgeYou say, "How are dwarven relations with the East?" "The East?" asks Royal Petitioner Redforge, narrowing her eyes at you. "Eastern Thestra," you say, "they vulmane, varanjar, and lesser giants." Royal Petitioner Redforge scoffs and says, "Those savages aren't worth two thoughts." "Isn't Dargund's Tomb in the East?" you ask. Royal Petitioner Redforge frowns. "Aya," says Royal Petitioner Redforge, "it is." "And you don't see those groups as standing between you and your ancestral home?" you pose. Royal Petitioner Redforge studies you and says, "It might be that if we were to move and retake it, they would try to stand in our way, as they have before." "Because you would need to pass through their lands to get to it?" you ask. Royal Petitioner Redforge nods and says, "It would be a foolish thing if they did though." "They might as well dig their own graves," Royal Petitioner Redforge says with a bit of a laugh. "We're happy to help them fill those plots." "Do you think it will ever come to that?" you ask. Royal Petitioner Redforge says, "One day. We're a bit occupied with other matters right now, though. When we've cleared away these pests, then we will have to ponder that." Quest OfferingPetitioner Redforge says, "As you've probably gathered, there is a divide between those dwarves who support the Flamehammers and those who support the Thunderaxes. Now, I think you can see how that could potenitally be disasterous for out people. We must all rally together, and the best way to achieve that is to make sure that there is a balance among the clans." "Rally the dwarven clas so that an equal number of Flamehammer and Thunderaxe supporters are here in the Cleft and out on the battlefield." "With the current trends, Thunderaxes being business-minded and Flamehammers being battle-minded, you need to convince two Thunderaxe supporters to take to the battlefield, and two Flamehammer supporters to stay in the Cleft." Koburn DarkveinYou say, "Are you in charge of these books?" "In charge of them?" asks Koburn Darkvein. "I wouldn't say thatm I'm 'in charge' of the..." "But you would be the best person to ask about information thatm I'm looking for," you say. Koburn Darkvein nods and asks, "What is it you're looking to read about?" "The history of the clans of Bordinar's Cleft," you say. "Ahh," syas Koburn Darkvein. "Well, we have many volumes on that subject. In fact, we have volumes dedicated entirely to individual clans." "What is it exactly you would like to know about the clans?" asks Koburn Darkvein. "Well," you say, "I am trying to bring about a balance of power between the Flamehammers and the Thunderaxes." "At leat in terms of how many clans that support them are here in the Cleft, actively contributing to its economy, and out on the battelfield, fighting," you say. "Hmm," says Koburn Darkvein," you'll be wanting to know then, obviously, which clans are allied with which." "But beyond that, what the strengths of those clans are," says Koburn Darkvein. "So you know which would actually make good contributions in their new roles." You not energetically, saying, "Yes, precisely. Where could I find texts for that?" Koburn Darkvein says, "That pile of scrolls next to Reader Laagnar has some good histories of the Cleft in it." "Dig among those until you find what you're looking for," says Koburn Darkvein with a smile. 'Clan Mountainhammer'Among a race of people known for their solid constitutions and brute strength, the Mountainhammers represent finesse and agility. Accomplished bowmen, the Mountainhammers have been instrumental in holding off the first waves of many attacks on Bordinar's Cleft. In recent conflicts, however, the Mountainhammers have refrained from participating in combat, choosing to remain within the city practicing their skills as artificers and sold by the Thunderaxes. 'Clan Blackflint'Clan Blackflint has a reputation as irredeemable wanderlusts. They spend much of their time travelling all over the world and return to the Cleft to tell tales they ahve collected in that time. While a few Blackflints remain settled in the Cleft, most can only be found in its halls for perhaps one month out of every year. Most dwarves do not trust them, thinking their loyalty to the Cleft to be suspect, but they are welcome around almost every hearth in the Cleft to tell their tales. 'Clan Runeaxe'The Runeaxes have made many of the magical discoveries of the dwarves and are also known as accomplished orators and inspiring holymen. In former times, they would use these gifts on the battlefield, as well as in the library or worship chamber, but they have grown increasingly more inclined to stay within the walls of Bordinar's Cleft in recent years. They are also known for keeping close company with their cousins, the Thunderaxe, with whom they have been friends for many generations. 'Clan Truehammer'The Truehammers are as trustworthy as their name would imply. They are stalwart supporters of the Flamehammers, and have concentrated much of their efforts in protecting and supporting their monarchs. Also know as great miners, they recently put down their picks in favor of focusing on utelizing their prowess in fighting with hammers to defend their king and people. 'Clad Coldfire'When the name Coldfire is brough up among the people of Bordinar's Cleft, almost the first thing that everyone will bring up is a fine piece of armor or a weapon that the family has forged. In addition to being excellent blacksmiths, they are also accomplished swordsmen, however, unconventionally driven to maste the use of the longsword. Vocal supporters of the Flamehammers, they are useful and loyal friends; a valuable asset to Bordinar's Cleft. 'Clan Warhorn'Clan Warhorn struggles to clear themselves of an unfortunate reputation as cowards. They were tasked with being the rear guard during the Stoneburn Wars. However, as the dwarven forces retreated from a devestating battle with the kobolds, the Warhorns closed the gate to Bordinar's Cleft, even though many of the Cleft's finest soldiers were still outside. Since then, they have found few allies among other clans, though they struggle constantly to redeem themselves. "Stay in the Cleft" (Truehammer)You ask, "You are of clan Truehammer?" Jorn Truehammer smiles and says, "Truest hammers in the Cleft. Save perhaps the Flamehammers." You grant Jorn Truehammer a smile. "I am sure that your aim is true," you say. "I have heard of your prowess with blunt weapons." "We find that smashing is the best way to get through what stands in our way," says Jorn Truehammer with a grin. "I understand that in previous years you have also taken up picks and helped in the mines," you say. Jorn Truehammer nods and says, "Truehammer miners were responsible for most of the metals that came of of the mine they worked in." "And why did you leave the mines then?" you ask. "To defend the Cleft," says Jorn Truehammer with a frown. "Why else would be?" You shrug and say, "Well, Bordinar's Cleft has an abundance of warriors..." "As well as miners," points out Jorn Truehammer. "Yes," you say, "but few of them have the talents your clan do. And productivity in the mines is nowhere near acceptable." "The Cleft will not be able to continue fighting without ore to smelt into weapons, armor, and fortifications," you point out. Jorn Truehammer looks concerned. "I didn't think about how low our stores have grown." You say. "The situation could soon be dire." Jorn Truehammer looks determined. "Then the Truehammers will ahve to return to the mines and keep our supplies ample." "Stay in the Cleft" (Coldfire)You say, "Hadl Coldfire, I am <Player Name>, and I was hoping to speak with you." Hadl Coldfire studies you and says, "Aye? What about?" "I understand that many sons and daughters of the Coldfire clan measure among the ranks of those defending Bordinar's Cleft," you say. "That they do," says Hadl Coldfire. "We measure among the finest wielders of longswords among the dwarven people, though dwarves may traditionally wield hammers and axes." "I see," you say, "I also understand that you are first class blacksmiths?" "That we are," says Hadl Coldfire, "every Coldfire is taught to wield a sword and also to be able to smelt one." "But since fighting has broken out, none of the Coldfires have been seen at the forges," you say. Hadl Coldire inclines their head and says, "The fight is too close to our doorstep for us to stay out of it." "But," you say, "how are you going to continue fighting with no weapons or armor?" "Aren't those who forge the instruments of battle just as important to the effort as those who wield them?" Hadl Coldfire looks thoughtful, admitting, "You do have a point... We have found the quality of our blades to be lacking." "Don't you think that you have an obligation as masters of your craft to exercise it for the good of your people?" you say. "There are many capable of fighting, but few capable of enabling those who do." Hadl Coldfire nods resolutely and say, "The Coldfire clan must put down their longswords for now and take up their tongs." "Thank you for making us see the sense in this, <Player Name>," says Hadl Coldfire with a smart nod. "Go to Battle" (Runeaxe)You say, "You are of the Runeaxe clan?" "I am," says Kalon Runeaxe, "what of it?" "I've heard a log of your clan," you say. "Namely that you have magnificent minds and inspiring tongues." Kalon Runeaxe chuckles and nods, saying, "We do often follow the path of the scholar or the clergy, yes." "But not all of you," you say. "No," says Kalon Runeaxe, "many of us elect to follow the path of the warrior, as well. In fact, even our scholarly types learn to be effective in battle." "And yet none of you have left the Cleft to fight to defend your people," you say. "At least, not in today's skirmishes." Kalon Runeaxes frowns and says, "That is true, yes. We have been trying to focus our efforts here within the Cleft." "But don't you think that soldiers who can think as well as fight are exactly what this effort needs?" you ask. Kalon Runeaxe looks a little interested. "What do you mean?" "I mean that Bordinar's soldiers fight heedlessly," you say, "with very little in the way of strategy and tactics." "The need educated men and women, like your clan, to go out there and show them how to fight intelligently," you say. Kalon Runeaxe looks thoughtful. "You know, you just may be right. Forethought is exactly what our battles are lacking." You nod and say, "And the Runeaxe are just the clan to lead them to it." Kalon Runeaxe grins and says, "I think it is time for us to move our books to the battlegrounds." "Go to Battle" (Mountainhammer)You say, "Brall Mountainhammer, do you and your brother represent the interests of the Mountainhammer clan?" "We do," says Brall Mountainhammer. "We are Clan Elders." "Then perhaps you can be reasoned with," you say. Brall Mountainhammer grunts and asks, "About what?" "Do the Mountainhammers consider their place to be here within the Cleft?" you ask. "Where else would it be?" asks Brall Mountainhammer. "On the battlefieldm" you say. "Are you accusing us of cowardice?" asks Brall Mountainhammer. "Our clan is known for our prowess as artificers. The Clefts needs us here." "But you are also great bowmen," you say. "We are," says Brall Mountainhammer. "I will certainly not deny that. Archery is in our blood." "The Cleft lack bowmen," you say, "but has artificers to spare." "You think it is best for us to take to the Wall then?" asks Brall Mountainhammer. You nod. Brall Mountainhammer studies you. "Are you asking me based only on our percieved merit?" Or is there more to it?" "Very keen of you," you admit. "I will admit: I am trying to incite Thunderaxe allies to take to the battelfield. The number of clans allied to Flamehammer outnumber your own." "Really?" asks Brall Mountainhammer, looking thoughtful. "I appreciate your honesty, and also the news. I would have to think of the Cleft's safety being in the ands of the Flamehammers and their allies." "I think the Mountainhammer clan just may br able to take to the Wall," says Brall Mountainhammer." Quest CompletionChancellor Dagnol Granitefist says, "This wedding is very exciting. With Dargand and Gwealla wed, the Flamehammer and Thunderaxe families will be joined, and there will be an end to the strife between them." [Balance the Alliances] Chancellor Dagnol Granitefist looks a bit confused as you approach him. "What can I do for you?" he asks. [Continue] He looks over the list of names. "So, there has been a balance of power among the Clans..." says the Chancellor. He nods in approval. "This is exactly what the Cleft needs. That Redforge is an asset. I will have to grant her an audience sooner next time." ParleysRoyal Petitioner Redforge
