Dialogue

Quest Offering

Kavarou Mangred says, "Do not think I am lying when I say that I don't know who is at the very top of this. I was sent a letter through a courier, and likely he received it from another courier. I can tell you though that it came from the palace in Ahgram. When I traced it there, I stopped looking. I recommend you do the same."

"If you really wish to pursue this, I know of a shrine to Vaelion that people often go to looking for answers. Now and then, they truly receive them."

Shrine of Vaelion

  • Eyeing the shrine, you an't help but wonder why you've come all the way out here for this. After a moment, you clear your throat and say, "Oh Vaelion...."
  • Feeling immensely foolish, you continue, saying, "I need your guidance."
  • "Who is it that is organizing the attack on the Beacons? Who is drawing the Cult of the Jackal in to them?"
  • "Who compels Zhila Mahdavi-Kia to the heart of the Sultan, where she will no doubt betray him!"
  • The shrine just sits there. You feel your forehead bead with sweat, wondering if you have been duped.
  • "Who in the palace of Ahgram would want this? Not the Sultan, surely..."
  • The shrine sits there quietly. You think, "No, not the Sultan..."
  • "One of his wives? Bywhy would they bring another woman there? If the Sultan dies, they lose their power."
  • The shrine does not respond.
  • You think, "The Vizier and the Emir are the most likely suspects."
  • "The Vizier and the Emir. Which of those two men would have the most to gain from this?"
  • The shrine still does not respond. You think, "The Vizier could have ties to the mordebi in Khal..."
  • "But," you think, "this is war. This is a matter of war. Which of those men know of war."
  • "The Emir!" you say. "War is his business. It was the Emir, wasn't it?"
  • You swear you see the shrine twinkle. You realize then that it must have been Vaelion guiding your thoughts. "Thank you Vaelion," you say. "You are truly the keeper of all knowledge."

Emir Rostam Zanjani

  • You say in a low voice, "Emir Rostam Zanjani, a word with you, if you would..."
  • "I am not sure that I have the time at the moment," he says, "if you would please..."
  • "You do not want me to say the things I have to say any louder than I am," you say. "Do not force me to raise my voice."
  • The Emir studies you, asking, "What do you have to say?"
  • "I know about the attack on the Beacons," you say, "and I know about the Cult of the Jackal. And I know about Zhila Mahdavi-Kia."
  • "Ah," says the Emir, exhaling.
  • "What I don't know is why the Sultan's dearest friend is betraying him," you say. "Perhaps you can help me with that."
  • "I have not, nor would I ever, betray the Sultan," says the Emir coldly. "And I will not stand to hear one such as yourself accuse me of it."
  • "Then why bring a viper to his breast?" you ask. "Why encourage a war between Ahgram and Khal?"
  • "To begin with, I had nothign to do with the marriage of Zhila to our illustrious Sultan," he says. "In fact, I did everything I could to stop it. I know she has ill designs for our Sultan, but he will not send her away."
  • "Secondly, I have not begun anything that was not already in the process," he says. "I have merely sped up the process so that we can stop watching our backs and focus on advancing."
  • "And the Cult?" you ask. "How can you justify aligning yourself to them?"
  • "I have not," he says. "I have merely given them the power to overcome another Cult, the Cult of the Scorpion, who I believe to be the much greater threat. That they will then send their minions to aid in the downfall of the Beacons is my pay."
  • "But they would stir up chaos," you say. "The economic devastation that will be left after the Beacons are lost is exactly the sort of thing they are trying to bring about."
  • "The are under my control," he says. "I will stop them when I need to."
  • "You cannot presume that," you say. "You cannot presume that any of this is going to work out the way you want it to. You are playing with forces you can't possibly hope to control and will bring great ruin to this continent.
  • "Still," he says, "you cannot turn me in. I am integral to our continued stability. If I am gone, there will be nothing to stop the Cults, or the mercenaries, or Zhila."

Quest Completion

The Emir studies you and says, "So you see, the best you can hope to do with what you know is stop some small part of it, but you can't hope to stop all of it."

[continue]

"And you should know that Zhila plans on moving against the Sultan very soon," he says. "If you do not move to stop her, the Sultan will die, and if you do take the time to stop her, everything else I hav put into motion will run its course."

"So what is it going to be? The Cult, the Sultan, or the Beacons?"

note: Emir Rostam Zanjani offers you three quests. Save the Sultan, Save the Beacons, and Stop the Cultists. You only get to choose one of them.

Rewards for each quest are the same (Ahgrammun xxxxx Shirt, +20 to xxxxx presence)
