Dialogue
Quest Offering
Kavarou Mangred says, "Do not think I am lying when I say that I don't know who is at the very top of this. I was sent a letter through a courier, and likely he received it from another courier. I can tell you though that it came from the palace in Ahgram. When I traced it there, I stopped looking. I recommend you do the same."
Kavarou says, "The Night Rain, the roof-runners of Ahgram, know everything that happens in Ahgram. Hire them to gather information, and you will have your name."
Roofrunner Firuz
- You say, "Roofrunner Firuz, I need a favor from you."
- A favor?" Asks Roofrunner firuz, raising an eyebrow. "Why should i want to do a favor for you?"
- "I want to know something about activities going on ion the palace," you say. "You tell me what I want to know and I will tell you what I know."
- "Why should i care what you know?" asks Roofrunner Firuz.
- "Because it could potentially be used to blackmail some very high ranking members of the Sultan's Court," you say.
- "I like blackmail," says Roofrunner Firuz with a smile.
- "Then find out for me who is directing the attack on the Beacons," you say.
- "The attack on the Beacons?" asks Roofrunner Firuz, eyebrows springing up to the top of his forehead.
- You nod and say, "Someone is instructing a man named Kavarou Mangred through a courier named Pekwie Tequami - or possibly even through another courier to Pekwe - to organize the attack.
- "This same person seems to have connections with the Cult of the Jackal," you say. "As well as Zhila Mahdavi-Kia."
- "None of these connections bode well for the Sultan or Ahgram." you say.
- "And whoever's pulling the strings has a lot of skeletons in their closet," Roofrunner Firuz says with a grin.
- You nod and say, "So you can see why this information is so valuable."
- Roofrunner Firuz nods and says, "Fair enough. I'll send some of my most trusted runners to look into it. Speak with me again shortly."
- You smile and say, "Thank you."
-
-
- "I have a name for you, Chantillary."
- "Oh? And who is behind all of this?"
- "Emir Rostam Zanfani was seen exchanging letters with the courier in question. Said letter was looked over as the courier was eating. It was intended to be borne to the leader of the Cult of the Jackal and contained directions and a time. Nothing more. The spot is some bare patch in the middle of the desert. Doubtless something more interesting will occur there later."
- "Ahh... a connection between the Emir and the Cult of the Jackal. That alone was worth the trouble."
Emir Rostam Zanjani
- You say in a low voice, "Emir Rostam Zanjani, a word with you, if you would..."
- "I am not sure that I have the time at the moment," he says, "if you would please..."
- "You do not want me to say the things I have to say any louder than I am," you say. "Do not force me to raise my voice."
- The Emir studies you, asking, "What do you have to say?"
- "I know about the attack on the Beacons," you say, "and I know about the Cult of the Jackal. And I know about Zhila Mahdavi-Kia."
- "Ah," says the Emir, exhaling.
- "What I don't know is why the Sultan's dearest friend is betraying him," you say. "Perhaps you can help me with that."
- "I have not, nor would I ever, betray the Sultan," says the Emir coldly. "And I will not stand to hear one such as yourself accuse me of it."
- "Then why bring a viper to his breast?" you ask. "Why encourage a war between Ahgram and Khal?"
- "To begin with, I had nothing to do with the marriage of Zhila to our illustrious Sultan," he says. "In fact, I did everything I could to stop it. I know she has ill designs for our Sultan, but he will not send her away."
- "Secondly, I have not begun anything that was not already in the process," he says. "I have merely sped up the process so that we can stop watching our backs and focus on advancing."
- "And the Cult?" you ask. "How can you justify aligning yourself to them?"
- "I have not," he says. "I have merely given them the power to overcome another Cult, the Cult of the Scorpion, who I believe to be the much greater threat. That they will then send their minions to aid in the downfall of the Beacons is my pay."
- "But they would stir up chaos," you say. "The economic devastation that will be left after the Beacons are lost is exactly the sort of thing they are trying to bring about."
- "The are under my control," he says. "I will stop them when I need to."
- "You cannot presume that," you say. "You cannot presume that any of this is going to work out the way you want it to. You are playing with forces you can't possibly hope to control and will bring great ruin to this continent.
- "Still," he says, "you cannot turn me in. I am integral to our continued stability. If I am gone, there will be nothing to stop the Cults, or the mercenaries, or Zhila."
Quest Completion
- The Emir studies you and says, "So you see, the best you can hope to do with what you know is stop some small part of it, but you can't hope to stop all of it."
-
- And you should know that Zhila plans on moving against the sultan very soon," he says. "If you do not move to stop her, the sultan will die, and if you take the time to stop her, everything else I have put into motion will run its course."
- "So, what is it going to be? The Cult, the Sultan, or the Beacons?"
