Dialogue

Quest Offering

You think to yourself, "The Beacons are the most important thing to save. If they fall, it means not only a devastating blow to the economy, but also a symbolic break between Ahgram and Khal that could easily lead them to war."

"I must save the Beacons. Perhaps Ahgram's merchant families would be interested in helping stop this. If I can muster a force, I should notify Hafeez to rally the Beacons."

Magnate Zeeba Kordiyeh

Lend Aid

  • You say, "Magnate Kordiyeh, a few moments of your time, if you will..."
  • She frowns and says, "Very well, what is it?"
  • You say, "A matter of great importance. The Beacons are coming under attack."
  • Her eyebrows raise in alarm. "What?" she asks. "Are you certain of this?"
  • "Completely Certain," you say. "A spy was uncovered at the Beacon of Hafeez Al'Azzimat."
  • "He has catalogued all of their weaknesses," you say, "and when we caught him, he had already turned them over to the varanthari mercenary band he represents."
  • She nods and says, "I am not pleased by this. I make use of many trade routes that pass through that area."
  • "Then take action," you say. "I am trying to rally yourself, the Djash, and the Sabiri to help defend them."
  • She looks visibly irritated at the names of the other families, but then she nods. "I suppose they too have an interest in preserving the Beacons," she says.
  • "You're sure it wasn't one of them who hired the band?" she asks.
  • You not and say, "There is no evidence to indicate that."
  • "Then who?" she asks, probing you.
  • "We could not trace this to its source," you lie. "It is possible that one of the other families was involved, but we don't have time now to trace whether it was them. Besides, don't you all stand to suffer from it?"
  • She nods and says, "Very well. There will be time later to investigate the matter. For now, I will send four unites of my strongest sellswords to aid the Beacons."
  • You nod and say, "I am sure that will make a considerable difference."

Magnate Mastafa Sabiri

Lend Aid

  • You say, "Magnate Sabiri, it is critical that I speak with you."
  • "Then speak," he says plainly.
  • "You are a man of economics and, I think, of war," you say.
  • He chuckles and says, "I find it is smart to understand what one peddles, so you know when you should be peddling it."
  • You nod and say, "A very wise position. Anyway, I am here to entreat you as a merchant and as a warrior."
  • "Go on," he says with a raised eyebrow.
  • "As we speak, a varanthari mercenary band is moving on the Beacons, with the intent to destroy them," you say.
  • His face darkens and he says, "Destroy the Beacons? Why?"
  • "Perhaps to launch overland trade into chaos," you say, "perhaps to sever ties between Ahgram and Khal. There are any number of potential reasons."
  • He nods and says, "The first is of particular concern for me, though I'm sure that's why you came to me."
  • You nod and say, "I am hoping that it might be effective in rallying all of the merchant powers in Ahgram."
  • Mastafa chucles, "So you mean to bring the Djash, the Kordiyeh's, and my family together in a single effort?" he asks. "Good luck with that."
  • "Are you unwilling to work with them?" you ask.
  • He shakes his head. "As you said, I know a thing or too about battle," he says, "enough to know that you will need a significant force to counter varanthari mercenaries. I only hope the others see that as well."
  • "I will send five units of swords to the Beacons," he says. "I hope that you will be successful and they will be joined by others."

Magnate Atiqa Djash

Lend Aid

  • You say, "Magnate Atiqa Djash, I must speak with you."
  • Magnate Atiqa Djash examines you and asks, "Oh really?"
  • You say, "Truly. It is a matter of great urgency and importance."
  • "Then by all means, get on with it," says the Magnate.
  • You nod and say, "I have knowledge that the Beacons are going to soon come under attack by varanthari mercenaries."
  • "How do you know this?" asks Magnate Atiqa Djash, narrowing his eys.
  • "I have been following their trail," you say. "Hafeez Al'Azzimat has suspected it for some time, and we managed to uncover a spy who admitted it was coming."
  • He nodes and says, "Well, this is certainly not good news."
  • "It most certainly is not," you say. "You know what it would mean for overland trade, and while I am sure one such as yourself is not dependent on a few trade routes, I am sure you would feel it in some way."
  • "So what do you propose then?" he asks.
  • "Any aid you can send would be excellent," you say. "I cannot expect you to pull all of your guards off of your goods, but any you can spare..."
  • He nods and says, "This is a critical effort. I have many warriors at my disposal, and the money to hire more if need be."
  • "I will send four units of sturdy men and women," he says.
  • You nod and say, "I am sure you know how much of a help that will be, and will not insult your intelligence by repeating it."
  • He smiles and says, "Do not dwell on it a moment longer."

Quest Completion

Hafeez says, "You cannot know what a relief it is to know what you've done. The merchant families have the best paid force in Ahgram."

[Continue]

"The veranthari may be keen warriors, but the Ahgram families have hoards of money on their side," says Hafeez. "This will be a battle to remember."
