Bring all the evidence you gather to the Sultan.
Walkthrough
Hail Vizier Davood Khani at the top of the steps to the right of the Sultan (-86540, 3663, 4819). Do a "Convince" parley with him (it's not a gossip as the text says).
Turn left from facing the Vizier and there should be a stack of books to harvest -- you'll receive Zhila's Book.
Parley with the Vizier again, and he'll give you Zhila's Handwriting Sample.
Head to the Clothing Merchant Kaneb Adon on the East side of the city (-37111, 2741, 1841) and parley with him (Convince). He'll give you Merchant's Statement.
Now, head back and speak to the Sultan and parley with him (I think it was a convince again). Upon success you can speak to him to complete the quest and recieve your shirt.
Dialogue
Quest Offering
Emir Rostam looks at you gravely and says, "The Sultan loves Zhila beyond reason, and he cannot see what she is preparing to do to him because of it. It is up to you to find a way to convince him of her betrayal. I recommend beginning with the Vizier, who she has had some conversations with."
"Make no mistake, Strasha, I do not want my Sultan to die. But I have tried to warn him aleady, and he will not listen to me. You are his only hope. Do not mention me - he will dismiss it if you do."
Vizier Davood Khani
Zhila's Motives
- You say, "Vizier, I humbly request an audience with you..."
- The Vizier raises an eyebrow and says, "That is not the sort of thing you request from me directly. You must go through the proper channels."
- "Please," you say, interuppting him, "The Sultan's life is at risk."
- Vizier Davood Khani quiets and stares at you saying, "His life?"
- You nod and say, "Zhila, what do you know about her?"
- He inhales deeply and says, "Only enough to say that I am not surprised her name has been brought up."
- "Has she ever said anything that would lead you to believe she was plotting this?" you ask.
- He shakes his head and says, "She merely tried to speak with me about our race."
- "About your race?" you ask.
- He chuckles and says, "Yes. The first time we ever spoke, she asked me why such an accomplished mordebi would work for a qaliathari. To which I responded by asking her why such a beautiful one would marry him."
- "I should have thought about it before," he says, "But a most curious expression crossed her face after I said that. I couldn't predict that it meant she could go this far, but..."
- "It was humored, and calculating," he says softly. "We have often spoken about the history of the mordebi empire. I have written many academic discourses regarding the fall..."
- "She seemed very convinced that it was all brought about by bad luck and the qaliathari," he says. "She was very offended when I said I thought it was more than that... Though I never meant to imply that our people are somehow doomed. I am not fond of that superstition at all. But, I do recognize the mistakes we have made."
- "Zhalia, though..." he says. "She seems very convinced that it is all the fault of the qaliathari." He shakes his head. "I should have seen it. It makes sense now."
- "How can we convince the Sultan she's a danger?" you say. "I hear he's entranced with her."
- He looks thoughtful and says, "There is a book I see her reading all the time. Sometimes she takes notes. Search the stack near the staircase for it and maybe something in there will incriminate her."
Evidence Against Her
- You tap the book and say, "This confirms everything you said. Assuming all these pen marks are hers."
- The Vizier nods and says, "If you examine them, you'll note that they are all in the same hand. Besides, only members of the royal court have access to these books, and only those highest among it would dare write in it."
- "And none of the Sultan's other wives have a taste for much beyond the compilations of popular legends," he says with a smile. "Though the First Wife has a fascination for animals from other continents."
- You nod and say, "Is that enough to prove it to the Sultan though? Has he noticed his wife's reading habits?"
- He frowns and says, "I think that to prove it to him, you will need a sample of her writing to corroborate it with. Fortunately, I have a note that she sent me a few days ago still sitting with my parchments."
- "Excellent," you say. "But even that doesn't prove she's out to kill him."
- "No, you're right," he says, "And the Sultan is too apt to forgive her for anything less. Even though in this case, 'less' means a passion for bringing about the downfall of his Empire."
- You ask, "Do you believe she would do the killing herself?"
- He says, "I hate to think of anyone as being capable of cold blooded murder, but if she believes strongly enough in her cause..."
- "And she probably has opportunities that no one else would," you say. "I am sure she is one of twelve people in all of Telon guaranteed to have time when they are completely alone."
- He chuckles and says, "Yes, unless she recruited another wife to do it, there really is no one in a better position than her. And I have a hard time seeing any of the Sultan's women relenting in their rivalry long enough to help her."
- You say, "Does she carry any weapons? If someone has recently delivered the means by which she means to do the deed, perhaps they can be persuaded to talk..."
- He shakes his head and says, "Impossible.... No one would be allowed to interact with the wives without being thoroughly searched." His eyes widen. "Unless..."
Kaneb Adon
Zhila Mahdavi-Kia
- You say, "Kaneb Adon, you sell many fine clothes."
- He smiles and nods, saying, "I make many of them myself. Others, I sell on behalf of the finest tailors on all of Qalia."
- "I have heard you are a master," you say.
- "I am," he says proudly. "Why, I make all the garments for the royal household."
- "Oh really?" you ask. "So you work closely with the Sultan and his wives."
- "I do," says Kaneb Adon with a smile. "They trust no one but me to clothe their figures."
- "Do you ever bring them anything but clothes?" you ask.
- "What do you mean?" he asks, raising an eyebrow.
- "If one of the wives wanted something they could not easily get from their place in the palace, would you bring it for them?" you ask.
- "I will act as a courier for them, now and then," he says. "They cannot so easily tread the streets as you and I. It would not be proper."
- "Oh of course not," you say. "No one could expect them to walk the streets of Ahgram buying what they need like a fishwife."
- "But," you say, "do you ever buy them anything that they probably shouldn't have?"
- He frowns and says, "Say plainly what you are referring to."
- "A weapon for Zhila," you say. "A weapon unbefitting a wife of the Sultan."
- He looks visably unsettled. "How did you know about that?" he demands.
- "It was noticed," you say. "You weren't very careful."
- He stares at the ground and says, "She is in danger, she said. She doesn't trust the palace guard, who she believes to be in the pay of her rivals... I was worried about her. She is so soft and beautiful."
- You shake your head and say, "You may have doomed your Sultan to death. She is not nearly so soft as she looks. She is bent on murdering him."
- His mouth hangs open and he says, "I swear I didn't know! I was only concerned for her!"
- You nod and say, "I will believe you... Write me a statement, warning the Sultan, and you will be pardoned for your involvement."
Sultan Omid Mahdavi-Kia
Pay Attention to the Evidence
- You say, "Illustrious Sultan, I must speak with you."
- He raises an eyebrow at you and says, "It is rare that people are bold enough to come straight to me, and not one of my advisors."
- You say, "I must speak with you personally, though, as it concerns your life."
- "My life?" he asks. "And how have you concerned yourself with my life?"
- "I have uncovered evidence that indicates your wife, Zhila, is planning to murder you," you say.
- "Zhila?" he asks quietly. "What kind of evidence do you have?"
- You show him the book, the handwriting sample, and the note from Kaneb.
- "I found this book in the library," you say. "The Vizier says that she is often seen reading it, and making notes."
- "As you can tell from some of what is written in it," you say. "She has designs on bringing down the Ahgram Empire."
- "She has often spoken to the Vizier about these issues," you say, "and he will attest to that if you ask him."
- "And this note from Kaneb," you say, "details how he snuck a dagger in for her. You cannot think yourself safe with these thoughts in her mind, and this dagger in her hand."
- The Sultan's face is laden with pain. His eyes gloss with tears as he says, "I have heard many such warnings... I have discounted them all. My most trusted friend, the Emir, has tried to tell me."
- "While nothing here is definite," he says, "it is more than clear that she is a danger to me. I have been ignoring that, like a fool."
- He lowers his head and says, "I doubt that you understand what it means to meet your soul's mate. If by chance you do, then you know how difficult it is for me to act on this."
- He exhales heavily and finishes with, "But the Empire needs me to live, and so I will do what I can to keep her claws from my neck."
Quest Completion
The Sultan's head bows. You can tell he carries a heavy burden on his shoulders.
(continue)
"I suppose I must thank you for saving my life," he says with a weak smile, "though I cannot say I appreciate what I must do now. Thank you. I do mean it. It is not your fault that I love the beast that bears down upon me."
